Soft-Firm is working on the interior renovation of a home in a Ukrainian community in upstate New York. Our strategy is to introduce contemporary updates while preserving and amplifying original vernacular details. A minimal insertion integrates a multiplicity of functions and supports everyday life: a space for work, a space for repose, and a spiral stair to connect the first and second floors for a growing family. Simple custom millwork with painted details draws from Ukrainian embroidery and vernacular architectural details of the house, recalling Ukrainian khata, the traditional cottages that define the community’s cultural identity.
